Much of the credit for our outstanding performance record goes to the personnel comprising our team. Among these team members, tower crane operators are one of the most important. With the responsibility of moving and positioning construction loads (such as steel beams), our operators perform multiple duties to get the job done right. These duties include operating various controls to move the crane and jib; calculating load weights; performing safety checks on all machinery; communicating with crews and support personnel (via radio or hand signal); and observing work zone conditions.
Tower Crane Erection
Equally skilled are the team members who carry out the actual tower crane erection. That’s right. The Crane Guys don’t just wheel a tower crane into a work zone. It must be built from the ground up. The process begins with the construction of a base, which consists of a concrete foundation. Construction of the base requires a large mobile crane to move all the elements into place. Along with the foundation, a mast, slewing unit, jib, counter jib, and counter-jib all are installed during this phase. Clearly, this is a precision operation requiring the specialized expertise offered by The Crane Guys.
But there are many more steps in the process of tower crane assembly. Some of these include attaching the operator’s cab, connecting all power cables, programming various electronic systems necessary for crane operation, and performing a slew of load tests. Perhaps the most intensive part of the assembly process, however, is lifting the crane’s upper half into position. We do this by applying hydraulic power to the section, which lifts into position.
When the job is completed, we don’t just leave the crane standing around as part of the skyline, no matter how impressive it looks. For this situation, we implement a carefully wrought tower crane dismantling process. As with assembly, we proceed in stages. The first of these stages, following preparations, includes lowering the cab into a new position. Much of our work is supported by a mobile crane, which facilitates operations such removing counterweights and detaching jibs. The disassembly process finally concludes with our team disconnecting the crane base from the cement foundation described earlier.
Tower Crane Lift Planning
It should come as no surprise that assembly, disassembly, and operation are the result of meticulous tower crane lift planning. Before any plan takes shape, however, we must decide what type of lift we’re dealing with – standard or critical, both of which are determined by load weight. With the lift type identified, we engineer the actual plan, a process that includes load, radius, and center of gravity calculations; the selection of hardware and rigging such as chains and ropes; and a site survey to identify hazards, obstructions, and locations of utilities.
When conducting the planning phase of tower crane installation, we also factor in many different external variables. One of the variables carefully examined is the soil condition of the crane site. Soil must be thoroughly analyzed and evaluated because our crews will be carrying out substantial excavation in order to install the concrete base discussed earlier.
Mobile Support Cranes for Tower Crane Installation

Another external variable incorporated into every plan is mobile crane deployment. This versatile crane, of course, is necessary for hoisting certain structural components into place during tower crane construction.
What about tower crane capacity? How do we determine how much can be lifted? Fortunately, all this is worked out during the planning stage, too. Many factors come into play when we calculate lift capacity. These include the boom angle, radius, and different meteorological impediments such as rain and wind, which can hamper a lift and create unplanned hazards. There’s no guessing here. If wind gusts exceed a specified limit, we put the lift operation on pause until safer conditions prevail. While more subtle than wind, rain also can be troublesome, as the falling droplets can accumulate on rigging and burden it with unintended weight.
Construction Crane Services
It’s important to remember that The Crane Guys covers all situations with a wide range of tower cranes, each with its own specialty. A luffing jib tower crane, for instance, can move its jib both vertically and horizontally as the situation demands. A flat-top tower crane, in contrast, is limited to horizontal movements. Each of these is distinguished from the most conventional machine, the hammerhead tower crane, which is characterized by a metal tower peak rising above the operator’s cabin. We offer all of these to service a wide range of projects.
You’ll be glad to know that The Crane Guys has you covered all the way, no matter what the size and scope of your construction project. That’s because in addition to tower cranes, we offer a full range of construction support cranes. And what’s especially convenient is when we offer them. You see, The Crane Guys is available to service your needs 24/7 — all 365 days of the year. So, call us any time. We’ll be ready to serve.
