RF Safety Awareness for Crane Rental Crews

Protecting Crews with Radio Frequency Safety Awareness

When it comes to crane rental services, The Crane Guys are known for going the extra mile. The extra mileage certainly is reflected in the company’s ongoing safety awareness training for crews.  These programs cover a wide array of topics critical to the smooth operation of Los Angeles and Orange Counties, as well as certain industries serving these cities. Among the educational programs is RF Safety Awareness for crane rental crews, which is a must-have for the telecom industry. Safety training is ongoing at The Crane Guys with courses conducted by our Safety Director in our dedicated training room.

RF (Radio Frequency) Safety Awareness Training addresses radiation issues on specific job sites, particularly those pertaining to telecom repairs and installations. The aim is to minimize radiation hazards, creating a safe environment for on-site workers. There are many factors to consider, including the variety of radioactive possibilities, each one presenting its own kind of risk. Microwave frequencies, for instance, can cause permanent injury to people, as well as damage to any crane boom or cable standing in the wave path.

For RF construction and crane crews, a top priority is differentiating between the two types of radiation – ionizing (radar, medical/laboratory applications) and non-ionizing (video display terminals, television transmitters, high-power transmission lines, etc.)

Crane Guys personnel are specifically trained for controlled exposure to radiation. Controlled applies to locations in which exposure is possible to people aware of the risk and able to control their exposure.  Uncontrolled environments, on the other hand, are those in which exposure occurs in everyday environments, such as place of employment. People in these situations have no control over their exposure. This does not require specific training.

For controlled entries, swiftness is critical in order to avoid harmful over-exposure. Crews are trained to get in and get out within six-minute intervals, each separated by breaks of a specific duration. In certain cases, the six-minute limit can be exceeded if a six-minute average is attained.

Once crews complete their RF Safety Awareness training, they are fully qualified to implement protective measures at telecom repair and installation sites. The safety-assurance process includes:

  • Participating in the completion of an RF assessment
  • Participating in the completion of a Job Safety Analysis (JSA), or Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)
  • Documenting jobsite exposure areas
  • Implementing a hazard mitigation process
  • Identifying sign placement

All in a day’s work.

Yes, The Crane Guys go well beyond crane rental services with ongoing training programs that keep crews sharp and job sites unfailingly safe. When you want the most prepared crews, sturdiest vehicles, and best equipment for the job, contact The Crane Guys.
